Read your pill pamplet information. That is where you will get the most reliable answer so, for combined contraceptives it takes 7 days unless you are a day one start (unless you start the pill on the first day of your period) then you are protected immediately and do not need back up contraception.
Note in Austrailia pill pamphlets tend to say 14 days. Doctors like to tell patients to use condoms for longer than 7-14 days because they want people to get into the habit of taking pills before giving up a barrier method to make sure ther are no accidental pregnancies. If you're taking your pills pefectly, there is medical no need to use back up contraception after 7 days.

To be on the same side use a differant method of birth control for at least a month after you start the pill. I was always told it was a month to fully be in your sysytem
