If Φ = arctan(x/√2) then
tan(Φ) = x/√2 and
x = tan(Φ)*√2

If Φ = arctan(x) then
x = tan(Φ)

If it helps, read 'arc' as 'angle whose tangent is' so, for example, arcsin(x) means 'angle whose sin is x' and, if you say Φ = arcsin(x) then if Φ is the angle whose sin is x, it must be that sin(Φ) = x

Kewl?☺
