OF THE ANSWERS I READ ONLY ONE IS CLOSE TO BEING CORRECT. WELLS HAVE TO BE A CERTAIN DISTANCE FROM SEPTICS, AND CATTLE. WHEN YOUR DRILLER SHOWS UP TO DRILL HE WILL MAKE SURE ITS LOCATED PROPERLY. YOU WELL WILL NORMALLY BE WITHIN 25'-50' OF SURRONDING WELLS. IF THE SURRONDING WELLS HAVE BEEN THERE ALONG TIME YOU MY WANT TO GET SOME WATER SAMPLES TAKEN AND CHECKED FOR CONTMINATES.

first confirm the distance of source of water from your farm and dig a well close to the source of water. dig a well on the upper side of the farm so as to allow flow of water under the influence of gravity to your farm.if there are hills at the borders of your farm then dig the well at some distance from the base of the hills or mountains as water generally flows downwards from the hills and could prove to be a perennial source of water. do check whether the sub surface layer of soil is hard or soft.do dig a well in water permeable soils to increase infiltration and retention of water.dig the well some distance away from the cattle mongers.

As per Vasthu east-north corner(ISHAN) is the best place. u can take the help of water diviner as well or if u are some what spiritualistic, can make ur own dowser by straitening two aluminium hangers and holding them from the handles(by giving small bend), not so tight, in each hand straight at shoulders height. Where they will cross each other u might find water at that spot. GOOD LUCK....

There are water divination experts available in India. They locate the under ground water by electro magnetic sensitivity.
The most ordinary way is to locate the spot where a tree grows well and dig the well near to it.

ask expert surveyor . Some rural expertise also have some tricks they fond out where there will be source of water.
at ranchi , when we were to build house, we consulted such a person, who without digging, told that there is good sweet water abundantly. when drill machine was deployed there was no water in depth. But expert told that continue digging. after few fts. water burst out and when drilling went more depth, the force of water was so much that drilling became difficult.

as per the VASTHUSASTRA, the location of a well in a dwelling house can be either in the NORTH EAST corner of the house or on SOUTH WEST corner.the NE is ideal. this is because the KITCHEN position will be in the N-E corner location and the well if located in that corner can be fully utilised by the house wife. please note that there shall not be any septic tanks/ ditches for waste disposal etc atleast 20m radius from the well . to locate a well position, there are engineers in the GROUND WATER ENGINEERING Depts, at all district HQ's and they charge a nominal fee of 500 to 1000/- per position. their works are reliable by 60%. For Bore well locations, their reliability is 70-80%.

Check out with a water diviner. show him your plot/area. he will locate the right spot for you. Else take help of scientific methods using technical people using sonar. North-East direction is the best to have water, but water need not necessarily be available down there in your plot. You can have a ground water storage tank built later in that direction.

Assuming you are digging (drilling) a deep well, one that reaches the underground aquifer, it doesn't matter much where you put it. In our area of the mid west, rural wells are typically 100' deep with the water pump located at about 60' - 70' deep.
