I've looked all over and I can't seem to find a suitable answer that would work for an 8th grade definition for my vocabulary. Please help, I would be most appreciative.

Resolution in the scientific sense, means the ability to distinguish between two closely spaced measurements. High resolution means being able to distinguish two measurements that are close together, low resolution means only being able to distinguish two measurements that are far apart.

The term is often used in optical imaging, where it describes the ability of a telescope or microscope to capture fine detail in an image. High resolution imaging means the instrument can make sharp images with lots of detail in them, low resolution implies fuzzy, blurry images.

In spectroscopy, high resolution means the ability to distinguish two closely spaced wavelengths or frequencies.

High resolution in a scale means you can reliably use it to detect small differences in weight.
