I'm interested in learning something about the demographics of participants in "Yahoo Answers". Who amoung ya'll lives in a household that participates in either of these programs? Is it a temporary situation or is it a way-of-life?

I am a single mother of three children. Although I am aware that I qualify for food stamps, I am not on them. My children do get free school lunchs though. I hope that this is temporary, but sometimes, I am just not sure. Somehow, I barely manage to make ends meet. We are a family of four living off of about $1600 a month and that is before anything is paid. I hope this helps you out.

Food stamps - temporary. Was working a minimum wage job (with no benefits/insurance). Got pregnant. He was in school, and bringing in money from various odd jobs. We were already struggling, but you can't have a healthy baby if all you eat are ramen noodles and peanut butter. Went on public assistance for a little while, but am off now, and both of us are working at better paying jobs.

I get reduced lunches for my kids, being a single, working mother with 2 kids who goes to school and gets no child support, yeah it's a way to get by. I hope once I graduate things will get much better financially, but, until then God is good!

(along time ago)..when I needed food stamps I used them. I did not like ripping out the fake money papers, but we had to eat. I did not buy steak, or junk food. But I did buy healthy. I needed them at the time, and as soon as I could, stopped getting them. There is no shame if someone needs help. My kids got free lunch. Our taxes should go to helping people if they need it. And when you don't anymore, thank god it was there to help when you did.
