Madrid is banning overly thin "sick" looking models at a top level fashion show in Madrid.
Madrid is turning away many models after protests that young girls and women were trying to copy their looks and developing eating disorders. Organizers now say they want to project an image of "beauty and heath" rather than "waif like" "heroin chic" or the "gazelle look"
Milan, Iraly is planning a similar ban. But they maintain they are not to blame for eating disorders that usually started at home due to poor eating habits and constant dieting by mothers.

I think its about time! Its always been about the money. The models had to be rail thin tall and all so the product could be displayed well. Basically they wanted walking clothes hangers. The average teenage girl is constantly being led to believe that they must look like these models or like Nicole Richie or Paris Hilton. Its never been a secret that many models have eating disorders and drug problems trying to maintain the heroin chic look. Some models have spoken out over the years and admitted that they were advised to do drugs, make themselves throw up or starve to maintain or achieve a certain look. Now that the publics view has changed ,the powers that be suddenly see a need to ban the very thing they have been promoting. Maybe this change in attitude will take hold and last .

I'm sorry Milan, but we didn't have much of this health problem before the mid-60s when designers demanded models to look more twiggy. It's about time they stop it and let the poor models eat and exercise a little more definition into their form. Maybe then the pants waist lines will curve toward my waist and the to tops will be roomer in the right places. They have expected women to be shaped like men for too long.

What next? Will the stores sell bathing suits in Summer and coats in Winter? That too has been backwards since the mid-60s.

Yes, I am very pleased to here this and hope other countries will follow suit. It's about time someone took responsibility for the effects the modelling industry has on so many younger girls.

For the people saying it's not fair to discriminate against naturally skinny models, I do understand their point, however they are not banning thin models, but underweight models. It is not as though they will ever use overweight models for the catwalk, so I think this makes things even!

I think it is a good thing that the "too skinny" girls did not participate. It sends the message to young girls to starve themselves when they see these stick like women walking the runways. Men love curves. Women HAVE curves. 12 year old girls don't....I hope the modeling industry takes a lesson from the creators of Dove, and include women of all shapes and sizes. They are sending girls a wrong message when only the skinny-sick-looking ladies are in the show.

I think that's great, although I do not think all super skinny models should be banned from shows. They should have a mixture, because that is how the "real world" is.

I think it's a good start to take control of this anorexia epidemic. America has the most deaths caused by eating disorders in the entire world (per capita!)... so much for the "all Americans are soooo fat" bullsh!t.

I do have to say curvy girls are a lot more attractive than sticks--and, I'd think, clothing would fit better on them than just hanging off of where there should be hips. I realize that models are showcases for the clothing, but come on, if you design clothes for women you should make them fit women, not sticks.

It's ok, but it's not ok to go to the other extreme where if you don't hae curves, u r not sexy, cause believe it or not some girls are born skinny and all the "REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES" campaign have worked against them which can create new insecurities.

I think that is awesome. Models, actresses... you name it they all look like they are starving too death... it sends a really bad message to young girls that look up to those people, to be honest...guys like big butts.. and curves on a woman. the media is shoving it in our faces that thin is in but you know what if your comfortable with who you are everyone else will be too!

Just because a girl is skinny does not mean she's not healthy. There are a lot of naturally skinny people out there. And I think we should watch out what we say about skinny girls too as well as big girls. Just because a girl is skinny does not mean she's anorexic.
