Does anyone know how long (or how I can find out) it takes for an engine in a 1996 Geo Metro to restart?

It won't let me correct myself. I mean reset. I guess there's a difference between restarting and reseting.. Oops.. How long does it take for the engine to RESET?

Sorry that my question wasn't too clear. Let me rephrase it with more details. ;D

The alternator was replaced and called for the battery to be unhooked then rehooked (for some reason; this is my boyfriend's car and this is what he's telling me..) Apparently it takes time for the engine to reset and yes it had something to do with the check engine light.. I'm guessing the check engine light was on and in order to turn it off.. he had to unhook the battery? He can drive it.. but we're asking this question because he shouldn't drive it until it passes emissions and I'm guessing it won't pass until the engine is finished reseting! .. Wow, okay that was really jumbled. Hope that helped..

Don't worry, just drive it. reseting the adaptive emissions strategy requires that you complete a few drive cycles. that means the computer see you start a cold engine acheive the engineer/programers desired speed, engine reached normal operating temperature, and engine was turned off.

Once the engine Control module see's that all these requirements were met, it will perform a series of monitors (you don't need to understand what this is, just trust me).
It WILL take several drive cycles to complete all of the monitors required to clear code p1000.

1. start cold engine allow to idle 60 sec.
2. turn on a/c if equiped allow to idle 60 sec
3. turn off a/c
4. place shifter in D position allow to idle 60 sec.
5. leave in gear and turn on a/c allow to idle 60 sec.

go drive around at least 60 mph let coast to 30 mph. Make sure engine reaches normal operating temperature. Perform a series of extended wide open throttle accellerations ( 0 - 60 3 times oughta do it ).

Go home, turn off engine and allow to reach ambient air temp ( cold engine ).
That is one drive cycle.
You need three drive cycles and your adaptive strategies will be reset.

Sorry---Still don't understand your question.
Are you referring to the "Check Engine" light?
If so, it won't reset without a code reader or a scanner.
