Cuurently American citizens need only an valid government issued photo ID (like a driver's license) plus an orginal copy of their birth certificate with raised seal. this will change at the end of 2007 and passports will be required.

Even so a passport is so much simpler to obtain and carry. My travel agency in San Francisco does tons of business to Mexico and we always recommend a passport.

state issue id birth certificate to prove citizenship or passport. i have been told you will need a passport after the first of the year.

No you need nothing , just a good set of sneekers and run like he-l. You should be Ok, they are watching people running in the other direction!
