The average SAT scores last year were 508 verbal and 520 math. This year 2006 College-Bound Seniors' Average Scores
Critical reading: 503, Mathematics: 518, Writing: 497. I'm not sure where corncob is getting his info as it doesn't jibe with what is on the CEEB website.

However a lot of colleges are putting much less emphasis on them because a) they are culturally biased and b) kids from more affluent families can effectively "buy" better scores by getting expensive coaching and tutoring for their kids as well as pay for a retake if their first results aren't as high as they had hoped. BTW, my scores were 650 verbal and 770 math w/o any coaching or retakes. BFD, I still didn't get into Harvard.

Total (I know it's different than above total): above a 2150 would be the best chance, but of course that's guessing. Look at the middle scores for the schools you are interested in. I think that the scores I gave should give you a chance at selective private schools like Northwestern or NYU. But there's a difference between the mean scores for Harvard, and the mean scores for Arizona State, you know?
