As an avid artist I would get one of those dry erase boards. Actually get two. Place one near the top and one near the bottom. From their dare him to attack. So I know won't that be worse? For a while but after that you could buy a long paper and he could do a fingerprint mural. Your little G will be the staircase picaso. If that does not spark his interest I'd paint the damn walls black. Then get a black light so it at looked cool for him. If not good luck anyways.

Use texture! Put a coat of plaster or painter's mud over the lower part and use one of the rollers that have long fuzzy material on it or a large-holed sponge to texture it.Then paint. Or use a faux finish that will blend colors and will not show the prints. There is no way to prevent the prints but you can mask the way they appear. Then you can clean them when you want and not feel stressed to do it all of the time! Best wishes!

LOL - are you planning on shocking them with the low voltage?
Why not try a semi gloss paint which will wipe clean easily? Or wainscoating? Or you can just leave the fingerprints and look back at them with fondness in 20 years...

There is a type of paint called "Kids room paint". It is very durable and everything wipes right off, even marker and crayon. If you are worried about stuff like that, then that might be your best bet. Or go for a medium color for your stairway to mask them.

You might concider a semi-gloss or high-gloss paint as used in kitchens an bathrooms. The "flat" paint used on most interior walls tend to get marked pretty easy. Where as kitchens and bathroom tend to be wet or dirty and it makes cleaning much easier as the dirt does not enter the surface of the paint.
