Educate yourself with all types of music...the more profound the better. You can't sing if you have nothing to sing about. Bob Dylan...horrible singer...but very profound.

learn to sing
anyone can make noise
chose the kind of audience you want to relate to
research what they like, research and find out what singers they like are successful
research and find out the kind of music as well they like and the singers who do it best.
Try to discover your best approach to them.(lewis Armstrong played for tips in a beer joint in New Oleans before he sit down to figure out what was going wrong; He was told with his face he better stay on the horn and in the background by black competation, and friends alike; he sang his first song and the rest followed; his stryle and rustic american voice made him a legend)
Think about writing your own songs, and singing them; to sing you have to write your memories, as you lived them.

You have to get yourself known among your community. Like singing at local functions and stuff. The key is to get your name out there, get some demo tapes circulating! Also, who you know helps a lot as well.
Also get a reaserch team....here go to this sight.

I hope this helps!
God bless.
