I'd still try them on, a lot of clothes vary in size depending on the brand name. Measurements are a good guideline, but are just that.
Also remember there are several different rises on pants now, low rise...mid rise...etc. YIKES!

I would still try them on until you find a brand that makes you happy! to get a great fit you have to understand the different types of fit that a brand makes. It sounds like you would probably like a boot cut jean. They are a little more fitted than a relaxed jean, but not tight enough to keep you from having children later ;) Measure the inseam and waist to get the general fit. each brand will be different. As a general rule you want the back of the jeans (or pants) to come within 1-2 inches from the floor when wearing nice shoes. so measure the inseam starting there. The best bet is to just try on and try on. I know Gap has some really great jeans and they aren't too bad in price.

Yes, try them on! With baggy pants it probably doesn't matter, but jeans, even those from the same brand, are all different, even if they're supposed to be the same size. Even 2 pairs that are otherwise exactly the same could fit differently because of how they were sewn. Being a chick, my clothes are tighter fitting than guys, so I have to worry about this more, but if I were you I'd still try them on.
But if you are just worried about finding out what size you are, just measure the waist and inseam of pants that you already own that fit well, then go from there.

Measure your inseam. After you know what it is, just buy that size and length until you get old and fat, like me...
