English &/or metric desired. Ideally would cover the drill/tap sizes anywhere from 1/16" to 1/2". Can find this item in the hobby supplies but it only goes up to 1/4", too small. I am looking for a broader range for common sizes used in auto and general repair.

Good luck finding one. I had been looking for one for years, finally gave up and made my own. Use it primarily for drilling out broken manifold bolts and keeping the frill straight when I cannot see directly.
i used 4 pieces of steel (1- 1" wide, 1- 1-1/2" wide, 2- 2" wide) and all 5/8" thick. I drilled all the hole sizes I needed, heated and quenched in oil. They work pretty well, and sometimes they work very well for other things as well.
Good Luck

How about a 117 piece tap and drill set? Metric and Standard. But it's gonna cost you us technician's prices. It is lifetime guaranteed though. Just search for "tap"

Your local Pep Boys or hardware store should have an 'Easy Out' tool set.
