Aromatherapy is a holistic medicine, that is a preventive and active approach to treat and generate physical and emotional healing energy. The properties of pure essential oils have deeply rooted histories of benefitting numerous psychological and physical afflictions. Centuries ago, many civilizations used aromatic plants, herbs, gums and resins for religious rituals, thus discovering their mood enhancing properties. Later, physicians, medicine men and herbalists looked to nature for cures and preventions for common illnesses and conditions. Many of the essences of of flowers, fruits, leaves, bark, and herbs (essential oils) are still well known and used today such as the oils of oranges, cloves, rosemary, sage and peppermint. Tea tree oil, used by the Maori tribe of New Zealand for bathing cuts, burns, and wounds, has been shown by science to have powerful antiseptic properties, and is becoming increasingly popular in use today.

In the modern world, aromatherapy as formal science began in 1937 when a French chemist, Rene Maurice Gatefosse burned his hand while at work in the lab of a perfumery. He dunked his hand into the nearest container of cold liquid which just happened to be lavendar essential oil. His hand recovered extremely quickly with little or no scarring. As a scientist, he recognized that the lavender oil must have unique properties in order to produce such a quick recovery. He then began to study the medicinal and healing properties of lavender and other oils and until his death.

Essential oils (pure essences) are obtained by steam distallation, cold pressing, enfleurage, or solvent extraction methods using the leaves of plants, flowers, vegetables, herbs, certain fruits, nuts and trees. Quality essential oils are all derived from natural elements, and produced without the use of additives, alcohols or anything synthetic.

Aromatherapy relies in part on the brains response to the stimulation of smell. Nerve cells in the nasal cavity detect smells and then passes the info to the olfactory bulb and on to the brain. Aromas are then linked to the limbic area of the brain and the areas such as the nervous and endocrine sytem that regulates bodily processes like breathing, digestion and hormones. The oils are thought to interact with the body's hormones and enzymes to cause changes in blood pressure, pulse, and other body functions. Another theory suggests that the fragrance of certain oils may stimulate the body to produce pain-fighting substances.

Aromatherapy can help treat simple things like headaches, sunburn, skin disorders, bug bites and cold symptoms, as well as arthritis, anorexia, depression, insomnia, fatigue, muscle pain, and stiffness, PMS, IBS, sinusitis, kidney, and liver problems. Therapeutical benefits depend on the essential oils used and methods of application for each oil. Many times, the best use of oils is a topical application such as massage, hot or cold compress, or soak where some of the oil is absorbed into the skin. Pure Essential oils can also be used in skin care products, body sprays or relaxing or sensual baths. In addition, essential oils can be absorbed through the nose, by inhalation of the vapors directly from the bottle, through an aromatherapy diffuser, room spray, dissipation by a light bulb ring, or humidifier. Essential oils are extremely concentrated, potent, sensitizing, irritating and can be toxic when used directly on the skin or sensitive body areas, or in excess. Women and very small children should avoid essential oils. In most every use, the oil is measured by the drop and must be diluted in a carrier oil or other medium depending on how you are using it.
