It fascinates them...the colors, the crackling and the way it "eats and breathes."
Do you get entranced by watching a waterfall? I mean we know it's water but it's the way the light plays with it, glistening and the rushing sound. To some the thought of watching a waterfall would probably seem like it would be as exciting as watching paint dry.
Well, just the same we take things for granted because we know how it works and we know what it's capable of. Children don't think of the consequences.
Explain to your child about how it works and what it can do and how to extinguish it. Once a child has started a fire they will do it again! Take them to your local Fire House/Station and let them handle the explanation if it helps you.
Good Luck!

No one in my family played with fire - if we had, we would have been punished for doing such a dangerous thing!. If you're the parent you need to take action immediately to prevent them from doing it again. If it's not nipped in the bud, they can turn into juvenile delinquents or criminals who can seriously hurt or kill someone.

They are curious and then mischievous. If you can catch them sit down and explain all the damage that can be done with matches and etas. Call your fire department and see if you can take your kids to talk with them usually they will take and talk to them and they may shock the heck out of them.....Good Luck on scaring them and tell them what damage it can do!!!!

It is written: "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it far from him."
Except of course in the case of liberals, who believe that fire and throwing poop on the wall is free expression that should be allowed.
