The answer would be the egg, the chicken that resulted from that egg had to be a mutant of another bird. Just like every creature, including races of people. Just think, at one point in history there had to be only one race of people and the rest are mutants of that original race, so at one point in history there was one one species of bird and the rest resulted from that one.

evolution sez - egg. at some point an egg was laid that counts as "chicken" - either a mutation, or crossbreeding that has enough "chicken-ness". An adult bird would not mutate into a chicken.
This depends on some sort of brightline demarcation between not chicken and chicken.
