The have a sharp stinger at on their backs at the base of their tail. It is venomous and stabbed him in the heart. Stingrays only have 1 stinger and usually do not use it on humans. It is intended as protection against other predators, such as sharks and they are usually very docile. It was a freak accident apparently. I have swam with stingrays before and it was a little frightening, but the captain of the boat seemed to know much about them and what to do and what not to do, so it was OK

I think it was fate that killed him..
That day they were meant to be filming rock fish .. for the documentary ironically name " oceans deadliest "
They did not find any rockfish , So steve decided to film stingrays for Bindis television show.
Steve did not agitate or threaten the stingray ( according to a police spokesperson who viewed the tape )
And the stingray must have felt threatened as it was in shallow water, and the barb flipped up as Steve was swimming overhead and it stabbed him throught the chest, And the barb hit his heart, as a reflex action, he pulled the barb out before dying.. Many people have specualted that if he did not pull it out he would not have died, That is false, the blow to his heart was fatal... Even if he did not pull it out he still would have died from the toxins in te tail... It is believed he went into some for of caridac arrest..
The coroners report is not out yet, But once it is finished many questions wil be answered..
The footage of Steve Irwin being barbed by the stingray will be destroyed after the coroner is finsihed with it, by request of his family and that was made official by a statement from Joe Stainton his manager and longtime friend..
God bless his soulxx

If anything I think that a sting ray is exactly the type animal that would. Most people don’t realize it but a stingray is a “shark in ballerina shoes.” They are just as deadly but just simply use a different technique. People are so used to seeing stingrays gliding around like beautiful ballerinas in these big aquariums and on TV documentaries. They don’t realize what they’re all about. Well let me tell you of my experience many years ago while walking the beach with my cousin one afternoon. We came upon this fisherman fishing under a bridge. He had something really big on his line and as he was reeling it in we were all wondering what is was going to be because that reel looked like it was about to break in half! Also, because the fisherman was fighting so hard for control we though maybe it was a shark, but suddenly low and behold a stingray. You should have seen how that thing was constantly thrashing its barb around, and that barb was something else! It was like a sword and none of us were gonna tangle with that thing including the fisherman! It was as big as a trash can lid and kept twirling it’s body around like a ballerina. Honey, that fisherman cut that line so fast he didn’t want to end up like you know who. Moral of the story: Don’t fool with sting rays. BTW, I have utmost respect for sting rays and think they are beautiful. I think the sting ray slaughters in Australia are deplorable. Also, the way some people are blaming the camera man thinking he may have startled the stingray is a bunch of poppycock. Steve Irwin chose his death, and no one is to blame for that except himself. The reason being he chose to be there of his own “free will.” It’s not like someone kidnapped Steve Irwin, tied him up against his will and threw him in the water with the stingray. If he “instead” would have chosen to go to the park that day, enjoy a barbecue and a game of catch with his son like “normal” fathers do this never would have happened.
I neither disliked nor liked Steve Irwin. How could I? I didn’t know him; he wasn’t my brother, sister or friend. I do believe he was a great conservationist and did great things for animals. However, from watching his TV shows I do know he teased “certain” animals, and personally I thought he was insane and foolish. He also left his son fatherless. I won’t even go into the subject of him holding his son with the crocs because that’s a whole extra 10 pages of type and I don’t have time. Personally, I think we’ve all been allowed to state our opinions, and let’s face it, it’s time we “all” moved on.

It is very rare, but when scared or angry a stingray will use it's defences, ray and pierce. Unfortunately this is what happened to Steve, through his heart. He probably felt the initial pain of the stab and then his complete circulatory system would have shut down

The stingray might have been hurt by someone before Steve got to him. You never know with animals.
But killing stingrays as a revenge is really sad, its not going to bring him back and its just going against he belief.
Poor Steve

worldwide information community assurance - because of the fact the worldwide mourns the dying of Steve Irwin, "The Crocodile Hunter," police proceed to inspect his freakish dying. grew to become into Irwin relatively killed in an twist of destiny or grew to become into he murdered with the help of a jealous group member? The barbed spike of a stingray leaves a wound that seems very very like a serrated knife or bayonet wound, Cairns police have stated. John Stainton, Irwin's supervisor, is quoted as asking, "Who grew to become into there, who witnessed the attack?" Police are thinking distinctive witnesses in connection with the attack, interestingly attempting to be certain if there is room for suspicion surrounding his dying. The incident continues to be decrease than learn.

I was also saddened by his death. I also found it very ironic that out of all the dangerous animals he's been in contact with that it was a creature that is usually relatively harmless that killed him. Supposedly it's extremely rare for one to kill a human, and it can only happen if it goes through the heart. I think I heard that only 18 people over several years have died in that way.

He was in wrong place at the wrong time.
He was very unlucky. Had the barb have gotten him in the foot, he'd be hobbling around on crutches.
But, it got him in the heart. Poor bugger.
RIP Steve.
