horses are a lot of upkeep and their total care cost is more than 5,000 dollars for food, shots, and eqipment in their first month. You also have to have room and board and a good amount of land for grazing and exercise for them.

There is nothing boring about owning a horse and yes, it is fun too but, and this is a big "But", there is a lot of very hard work involved too.
Cleaning its stall at least once a day, feeding, bathing, grooming, and that is just the horse. Its tack needs to be kept clean, there are times when it is sick and it needs to be cared for, training for it and you. I have just scratched the surface here and the list is long very long.
A horse is a big committment in more then just its size, the costs that go along with ownership and many times higher then a dog or cat.
But if you can get through all of that and much more then yes, A horse is fun.

Nikki,
Having grown up with horses I can personally tell you it is an incredible thing. We had 10 horses, not to mention Cats, dogs, bunnies, chickens and oh yeah a donkey named Cornelius. We had 8 kids in our family and my Mom & Dad. We grew up in the Hills of Orange Park Acres. Back when , Orange Park Acres was really country. After Saturday chores we wood take off all day with our horses and we did not come home until dusk. And believe me we had better be home by then or we were in TROUBLE. Back in the mid 70's things were a lot different then. We did not have computers or xbox 's, no cell phones, if we wanted someting other than basic things that we were given. We were blessed but we were taught a lot of great morals. Horses are awesome. They are a lot of work also. They need to eat, have there shots, have there hoofs shoed, cleaned , they need to be exercised and cleaned. They are wonderful companions and they love affection. You also need to think about where you are going to board them if you don't have a stable for them on your property. If you aren't sure, go to a place where they rent horses and go riding for a month or so and see if it is for you. You will probably be sore so be prepaired. Look in the yellow pages or try online for horse rentals in your area. Good luck and enjoy the realm of being out in the air free with a horse and flying at full speed. It's awesome. Happy horse hunting!!!!!

Yes horses are fun to own, however they are also a big responsibility, I started riding when I was 4 and got my first horse when I was 9, within a year I had 4. Which meant I was up every school day by 4:30 am to feed and clean their stalls, and after school I had to exercise each one, which meant riding each one, and because they were at varying degrees of training, on was my first show horse, the other was my fathers, however at the time he was a pilot and gone allot so " Charlie was my responsibility as well, next came Herbie a very green hunter prospect, which meant training him,and lastly came Peanut, a 9 month old throughbred filly, who was given to me by a friend of my fathers. So by the time I was done riding, or in Peanuts case working with her on a lounge line etc, then cooling each one of them off , and cleaning their stalls, and feeding them my days were pretty much shot. So before you get a horse make sure you are prepared to do some sacrificing, I am certainly not trying to scare you It is fun.
When I was 13 we opened a hunter/jumper stable in Suffield Ct.
It then became training horses, teaching, running the business,
I also started running Horse Shows. If you ever have any questions I would love to help you, we sold the business in 1982, however I still occasionally help people out if they are having problems, my e-mail is clz.1955@yahoo.com.

I'm in the same boat - I'd LOVE to have a horse. I want to throw in another prospect for you if a larger horse isn't your thing. American Miniature horses are pretty neat and in the USA they're being trained as seeing eye helpers for the blind. It's pretty cool as they're stronger than dogs and they can see more than dogs can :-) . They're smaller and easier to care for because of their small size. The down side is that you can't ride them. The good note on that is that they can be taught to drive and in many areas they can be shown in halter, in special jumping events and even in costume. They also come in all the colors and looks the larger guys come in. I've always wanted an Arabian but if I ever get a horse I may just end up getting a Arab type mini. Gorgeous critters! In some states in the USA minis can be kept in your back yard in the city! Three minis can be kept on an acre of pasture. They're a hoot to have around and from the few times I've been lucky enough to meet them, they're a hoot to have around!

OMG, i cant believe you would ask such a question!lol I have loved horses ever since i was little, just like you! I got my first horse when i was 14 years old and i had to buy it with my own money, girl you learn what money is in a big hurry with horses, but it all is so worth it! When i was 16 I bought my second horse, and i would never give up either of my horses unless I had no choice and even then it would be hard to get them away from me! Horses may not be able to talk to you, but they know just how to comfort you or just make you put a smile on your face!

Depends on you- They are a fair bit more maintenance than other animals, and they do cost alot more money, but they are worth it to me. Others (like my husband for instance) may not agree.
If you really want to know what it's like, you should volunteer to work with horses. Most people that own horses love a helping hand, and you will learn an awful lot without having to pay for it. I worked with horses for over 7 years until I had enough funds and time to get one of my own, so be prepared to have to save your pennies if you are thinking about getting a horse.
I find with horses its a case of "the more you give, the more you get", and you never stop learning when it comes to horses.
All the Best :)

I have had horses my whole life and I have to say, I am now glad for the break away from them...They are fun when you have the right one but it may take you 15 horses to find one trustworthy, gentle and loving horse. Horses are like big grown up, huge dogs...different moods, temperments, and problems so you are always at risk. Weighing in at 900 to 1500 lbs. is a lot of danger when you have an angry one. If you do find the right one, you would enjoy the time you spend together as you can saddle up anytime, go for a trail ride, brush them, etc. But even all of the grooming, feeding and saddeling up, not to mention trailoring to a park is a lot of work...about 4 to 5 hours a day.

Horses are fun to have, but they are also a great deal of work and very expensive to maintain. Since my sister didn't have the money to get a horse, she would volunteer to help those who did have horses. After realizing just how much work goes into having a horse, she decided that she really didn't want one of her own after all.

Horses are definitely fun to have. The "work" involved is less like work the more you enjoy it. I've had my horses for over 10 years and I have not been bored with them yet.

Yes, they are a lot of fun...until you find something else to do, then you get to realize how much work they are.
My dad raises Tennesse Walkers, and they are tons of fun, I love to be around them, and I don't mind the work, but there are lots of people who don't like all the work thats involved, or they get tired of them, then they have a boring horse that they have to clean up after and pay vet bills for.
All in all though I would say they are a lot of fun.
