Well, if you want to stay downtown REALLY cheap you can try Chicago Hostel International (http://www.hichicago.org/). It's no-frills accomodations right downtown near transportation, etc. if you're more interested in spending your money on sightingseeing, transportation and food, and not for a room that you'll only use for a few hours at best, it's the best way to go. And you'll get to meet a lot of young people from around the world, since Europeans and others have been using hostels for decades and know it's the best way to stay in a city. I stayed in one when i went to London a few years back and I saved a lot of money for food and ale!!!

I don't think there really are any cheap hotels in downtown Chicago.
Try The Essex Inn in the South Loop on Michigan Ave. Maybe the Travelodge on I think Ontario. Not fancy, but not dumps.
Good hotels are very expensive in the major markets.
If you want to stay in a nice suburb, try the Extended Stay in Skokie. Nice area and reasonable. Only 25 minutes from downtown, north suburb, by the Old Orchard Shopping Center.
Downtown again is far from cheap!

I always check trip adviser and AAA Between both you can't go wrong. The Mile is very costly! If you go back a few block, quieter places to stay. It really is a party town at times
