Too many possibilities.
Go to North Beach and pick any italian restaurant. Go to Mission district, and you can indulge in different types of food. Go to Noe Valley, and you can shop in the little boutique shops, and some small eateries. Haight/Ashbury has lots of little shops as well. South Beach area is making a revival for small eateries (Crossroads, Towns End, South Beach Cafe, etc.). Clubs are mostly in SOMA (South of Market). Lots of bars everywhere, especially Marina, North Beach, Mission, Castro.
For touristy things, you can basically listen to everyone else who will be posting. I can guarantee the following will show up: Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach (eat at Cliff House, Beach Chalet), visit Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Cheesecake Factory on top of Macy's at Union Square, anywhere in Union Square, etc.
List of things to do (not complete or comprehensive):
Lombard Street - the crookedest street (and one of the prettiest streets) in the world
Golden Gate Bridge - just a marvelous site to see, and a very pretty bridge
Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39 - eat the best crab sandwiches (and freshest), and from here you can walk to...
The Embarcadero Center - lots of things to do (shopping, restaurants, people watching)
Union Square - shopping, urban little park area
Ride a cable car - goes up and down the hills of San Francisco
Visit Golden Gate Park - check out the botanical gardens, visit the Japanese Tea garden, the newly renovated De Young Museum is now open
Visit one of the beaches like Ocean Beach (not the prettiest, but the sunsets are beautiful), walk across the street to eat at the Beach Chalet and admire the view of the ocean as you dine, or go up the hill and eat at Cliffside Restaurant
Go to China town and take pictures of the "chinatown gate" on Bush and Grant
Visit NorthBeach area - lots of italian eateries (and bars)
Visit Alcatraz (you can do this from Fisherman's wharf)

In San Franccisco try Khan Toke Thai Restarant on Geary Street for a really amazing and unique dining experience.
For a totally 'only the locals know about it' place visit the Columbarium. It's actual purpose is a little morbid - it is a place for hold the ashes of deceased people - but the history and architecture are facinatin and it is very unexpected. It even has very valuable orgina Tiffany stained glass window.

Eat, just go to Chinatown. If you want to explore some other kinds of unique food, go to Berkeley. A little short on budget, just go to Fisherman's Wharf and enjoy a bowl of Clam Chowder and some crabs.
Visit some of the beaches in S.F. Go to Point Bonita and enjoy a long walk out there.
Watch the SF Giants or Oakland A's play. Do not go see a football game, except maybe a college game. It's very expensive.

Try Sam Wo's in Chinatown but be sure to hang your ego at the door.
It is a joke but the head waiter in the kindest way puts down customers. He'll hand you the bill and the money from the table beside you as they are about to leave and says loudly. Check this for me please... I am sure they stiffed me on the tip.
Makes for cheap entertainment, but you gotta be in the mood for that sort of thing. A zaney, crazy evening after a weird show, with strange friends.
Sounds difficult. NOT IN SAN FRANCISCO
