I like the idea of the Dalai Lama. I would probably cast my vote for Thict Naht Han. Although his ideals are along the same lines as the Dalai Lama's so he might support him. I respect Thict Naht Han because he has avoided getting involved with politicians and has shown great respect towards other faiths. However apointing only one person would be a mistake as even the most inteligent person sometimes makes mistakes. Since we have six inhabited continents we should have each continent elect a representative and then have the U.N. appoint an overall ambassador to represent the world. This way even the Bush and Chavez like leaders of the world could say they were represented fairly.

Me!
Just joking. I would probably recommend either the Dalai Lama (he'd be the last one on Earth to provoke the aliens into violence) or some kind of scientist or science fiction writer (due to their knowledge of the subject). Although it might depend on what the aliens are like; organic humanoids landing in an advanced rocket is quite a different thing from giant non-corporeal quantum crystals that exist in six dimensions at once.

we would be completely screwed. we will not even %. a solid chief to represent each and every physique in united statesa.. we attempt. I continually vote...for the lesser of the evils. no person "solid" will step up for the job of being the president of united statesa.. there is not any way all people of their appropriate ideas will examine in for being the chief of the international. we would finally end up with somebody like Hitler who might trick the human beings into loving them, in hassle-free terms to confirm to late they're thoroughly loopy! Sigh. i assume If I ought to %. I %. me. regularly via fact i don't probable pick the job, money or accountability of the completed ingredient. i've got faith i may be much less probable to be corrupt and evil than others. regrettably i'm not sensible sufficient and can want an advisory panel that i'm particular might exchange into so corrupt they might overshadow any solid judgements i might make. We greater valuable save on with figuring out on our leaders by ability of areas. Inefficient, yet much less skill in contact. skill corrupts.

The Dahli Lama and if I could bring back from the dead to represent the world Mary Baker Eddy. They both would be needed for balance of Eastern and Western Philosophy.
There is no political or Christian leader alive today that I would entrust with the representation of the human race. A Christian would seal our doom with their attempts to convert the aliens. A politician would seal our doom by trying to gain power to annihilate other countries we happen to disagree with.
The choice of Mary Baker Eddy has more to do with her command of language than her being a Christian. (Her published works have the largest printed vocabulary known other than Shakespear and there is some contention that Shakespear did not author all the works we credit to him.)

Me. I'm capable of any task I put my heart into it.
Anyone who picks Jimmy Carter should remember his "great work" in the 70's. Noam Chomsky may have been bright with his theories in grammatic, but he is also a political radical that can't be well representative of the population.

Thats easy the Dalai Lama
Today, more than ever before, life must be characterized by a sense of Universal responsibility, not only nation to nation and human to human, but also human to other forms of life.
Dalai Lama
OM summed it up.

the answer would be completely different, if you changed "should" to "would". we "should" select someone who is humble, wise, honest and accepting, a truly beautiful human being who would embrace the alien lifeforms and treat them as total equals. someone who could teach them our ways and ideas, explain to them our history and philosophy. we "would" pick the complete and exact opposite, because there would be no "we" making the decision, even if the government told us we were. they'd shine their fake smiles and have thousands of people with guns ready to fire at any false move. cuz that's how our power-mongering greedy asshole leaders deal with things. if i were an alien, i wouldn't want to talk to us either.
