I am 2 months pregnant and I have heard 2 different things. I have a pet rat she is clean and very friendly. People keep telling me that I should get rid of her since I am pregnant. What should I do? Please help!

Ask your doctor. I recently asked the Yahoo people how I should keep my three cats and one dog, and another lady had pets and kept them but just had to be vigilant about her cleaning. Her doctor actually said her kids would be healthier with the pets than in a sterile, germophobic environment. I wouldn't kick your pet out without first finding a good reason. Please be careful when cleaning the cage--an RN (and others) have told me not to clean cat litterboxes when pregnant because of toxoplasmosis, but I don't know about rats. Play it safe--you may not want to clean it at all. Get someone else to! Consider it a pregnancy perk.

You don't necessarily need to get rid of it. Just have someone else clean the cage and care for her. Same with cat boxes - don't go changing cat boxes when you're pregnant, don't go cleaning rat cages when you're pregnant.

People used to live with real rats during pregnancy. It's not going to be a problem if you stay away from the feces and it is kept clean.

I would not clean the cage unless wearing gloves. I'm not sure if their feces carries any harmful bacteria, like cats do, but it is not worth the risk. I would ask someone at a pet store or call a vet's office to find out for sure how safe it is.

Make your husband or boyfriend clean the rat cage.

I kept my rat through my pregnancy. I had my now ex-husband clean his cage.

Take Care

YES! We have a dog that has started peeing on the furniture since i was about 6 weeks. He has been with us for 4 years and has never done this before. As for my other dog, everywhere i go, she goes, if i go to the bathroom, she is sat by the door waiting for me, if i go to the kitchen, she comes with me, she has only been like this since i got pregnant.

there is nothing wrong to keep a pet rat...... if you are unsure, you can ask your friend to take good care of her for the time being.

I'm not for sure if this is harmful like cleaning after a cat. Just ask your doctor first.

Ask your ob/gyn. I should be safe as long as you don't change the paper in the cage. The fecal matter may contain dangerous bacteria.
