Its because he didn't ask stupid questions...

He is a hero because he obeyed what God told him to do. What was his heroic act? He built an ark that withstood the heavy rains and the flood for 40 days and 40 nights. God had a purpose for choosing Noah. It is not saving the animals and his family per se. But what Noah did is the reason why animals and human beings were not completely banished from the earth. If he hadn't saved those animals, there wouldn't be any of them existing today. If he did not save his family, there would not have been you and me and other people here on earth now.

He is considered a hero because God told him to do something and he did it - despite the ridicule of other people. You have to understand the context. Up until this time, it had not rained. The ground was watered by a mist, I suppose something like what we in the South call 'dew'. God told Noah, HE was going to make it rain for forty days and forty nights and that Noah should build a boat (ark). It is not recorded what Noah's response was other than he believed what God told him and did it.
We just have to assume he might have laughed about the idea of rain because that would be the natural response and it was the response of his neighbors when he started building the ark.
Imagine the words exchanged. Hey Noah, whatcha buildin'? An ark. What's an ark? It's a way for me and mine to stay dry because God told me it was going to rain for a long time. Hey Noah, what's rain?

greetings...according to the bible Noah was a farmer called upon by God to fulfill a task. he is not listed nor diplicated as a hero. a story teller version may refer to Noah as a hero or a saint etc.. but he was simply a worker bee sought by God to carry out a task. good luck

Hate to troll, but if Noah is described as a Hero, it'd simply be idle bible logic "Hey look, hes in this book, he must be great".
However, being fictional, this point is moot :)

Because he was obedient to God. Even though the people of his day made fun of him. His sons were also obedient to God. That's why God spared their lives in the Great Flood.
