Actually I never PLANT a seed, they plant themselves, overwinter and drive me NUTS in the spring! I spend most of the summer pulling Rose of Sharon seedlings out of one side of a yard!

Truthfully, where I live, seedlings are everywhere underneath the trees at parks, in neighbors' gardens, etc. so I get my starts from there. If you really want to start from seed, start in the spring; as the amount of light diminishes naturally in the fall, the seedlings will reach for the light and become leggy and unhealthy.
