House flys are only active during the day or when light is present. During the night (or when it is dark) they need to sleep.

At dusk, they usually fly to a wall, a tree trunk or some other vertical surface where they are genetically programmed to land to avoid predators. They sit there until morning. When it is light enough and warm enough, they pursue the normal adult flys life of having sex and eating, and of course, annoying us!

As others have said, they sleep. Hanging head down from a surface - ceiling, underneath a desk or table etc.
In forensics this is actually occasionally used to determined time of death on gas poisoning. If a person died of gas and is basically surrounded by dead flies kind of spread about, it happened at night - the flies died where they slept and fell to the ground. If most of the flies are found dead around the window sills and other bright areas, it happened during the day as flies tend to congregate around bright spots.

The plural of fly is flies...and that i hate them. We used to stay close to a cattle ranch, the following in California, and flies were a situation. I wrote my personal epitaph to be etched into my gravestone, when I croak and my daughters stated they're going to do it. it is going to say: the following lies mom, How she did attempt to rid the international Of the beastly fly. also etched on the stone will be 2 crossed fly swatters and a can of Raid.
