something formal, not too bright but it doesn't have to be black (thats a more older custom) but bright red, or hot pink would be inappropriate. Think of church wear or something like a holiday dinner, something respectful, no cleavage and untucked shirts for men.

I don't think you should be so concerned about what the perfect thing to wear to a funeral. Be more concerned about the family and what you can do for them. Don't mean to sound harsh but this is the time to be more worried about others than yourself.

Unless the deceased is immediate family, black is not necessary. A dark, conservative color is appropriate -- no extremes in hairstyle, makeup, jewelry, or heels.
It amazes me how casually people dressed at the last few funerals I attended. Khakis and a sweater...I think that's terrible, personally.

When my friend shot himself this last summer, I faced the same question. With asking around I came to the answer of a black dress suit, and a colored button up shirt. (or any if not owned) The color makes it where you are not too gothic but the rest of the black shows your respect for the deceased. I hope this helps.

Don't wear black! Wear solid colours, conservative clothes, minimal jewelry/make up.perfume but wearing black to a funeral is so ... depressing.

Sounds like a social event. (the perfect thing)
I'm sure the deceased doesn't care what you wear.

something simple, comfortable - and yes - black.
Or at least mostly black - or black based.
I once wore a black skirt with small cream flowers and a cream cardigan twinset - and it went over well. It was comfortable, yet black without being too morbid.
