What is a creative activity that students can do while listening to a piece of music. they're high school students, and I want them to concentrate on the music more and search for deeper meanings in it. Any ideas?

Play some really emotional music (I would suggest the work of Martin Hayes www.martinhayes.com) and ask them to write down what emotion or series of emotions they hear. Compare them, and see which emotional themes are universal, and which are more personal interpretation.

Have them look up the definition of music in the dictionary and then have them draw or write their feelings on the definition. Im a music school graduate. Start first by asking them , If they had to define music, how would they do it. You should have your own definition on standby. What I learned was"sound organized for expressive purposes." Many dictionarys will be different , but that will make it interesting. Peace.

Make them clap along, stomp their feet, snap their fingers, just externalize the beat in any way. Also teach them basic conducting and make them conduct along with the music. Or just make them listen! That is the best way to find deeper meanings in music is to really listen. Tell them to close their eyes and listen.

Have them draw/paint/write while listening to the music, using color or words to portray the feelings they get from the music.
