No birth control (besides abstaining from sex) is 100% effective, but it is possible to have very safe sex if you are educated and informed about your option and are consistent and correct in the way you use them.
Your options are hormonal birth control -
The pill (combination or POP's - taken at the same time every day)
The shot (one shot every 3 months)
The ring (inserted once a month)
The patch (changed once a week)
IUD's (some are hormonal and some are not)
all of these are 99+% effective at preventing pregnancy on their own (meaning, that less than 1 woman out of every 100 will become pregnant in a year of using one of these methods) - this is with perfect use. Typical use (i.e. taking pills at different times, missing pills, etc.) decreases your protection, of course.
You can also choose to use barrier methods, the easiest and 'best' are latex (male) condoms - when used correctly they are 97-98% effective at preventing pregnancy (plus they prevent most STD/STI's).
The *most* effective would be combining a hormonal method with a barrier method (i.e. the pill and a condom) - this makes your chances of getting pregnant about 3/10,000 - very good, indeed! You can also use spermicide, however many people suffer from irritation when they use it.
Good luck!

It depends. Always use condoms until you are sure that your lover is not infected so, after about 3 months get test and make that decision. I like the pill myself 'cause I have no problem remember it everyday and can skip periods whenever I want until I can get a tubal or my fiance gets a vesectomy. No babies for us thank you! Some women like inter uterine devices or IUDs their good. The nuva ring seems popular because unlike the pill you only have to remember it once a month. Then theres the patch that you have to remember once a week. Then theres the depo shot but, I'm so scared of the nasty side effects. I'd never ever put that in my body.
Check out the section on the various types of birth control at www.plannedparenthood.com for more information and statistics on effectiveness.

Do you want to be absolutely positive you do not get an STD or pregnant? Don't have sex until you are married. If you are married, you can use birth control pills along with a spermacide. Double protection is the best thing.
For safe sex you MUST use Latex Condoms EVERY time and use a spermacide as a secondary precaution. NEVER EVER have sex without a condom if you want to live.

it's actually the "nuva" ring. the shot is extremely effective in terms of effectiveness, very close to 100%, but when taken correctly the pill, patch, and ring are also popular forms that are very effective, around 99%. IUDs are also very effective but are difficult to get if you haven't had children yet. and of course, hormonal birth control when used in conjunction with condoms and spermicide is your best bet.
