I think we're all one, but not in the frou-frou new-agey sense. If you think about it, it's just logical. The impression we have based on our everyday experience is that there's a me, and separate and outside of "me" there is this big, scary, dangerous universe with all kinds of strange and unpredictable things going on. But if you think of it objectively, we're part of that big, scary universe. We didn't come in to it from some cosmic aether, we came out of it, the way that apples come out of trees. Everything that we're made of, every atom, existed in the world before it all came together to make us. When we die, all of that matter will disperse as our bodies decompose, and it'll become other stuff.
So, to say that it's an illusion is true, in that it's an illusion created by our concept of what we are, which is actually totally different from what we really are. I don't think the universe is a big homogeneous mass of jelly, and that we are merely making up the forms that seem exist in it. I think our perception of the world is limited to the senses, brains, and time we have, and with that limited perspective, we don't get a clear picture of what's going on.
Based on what we believe to be true, we run around like everything is so important, despite the fact that we and everyone we know, and eventually every human will cease to exist in the form of humans. All this is just temporary, so it's no good regretting the past or worrying about the future. The only thing to do is just be totally aware of what's going on right now, and stop trying to force things to be the way we want them to be. The only thing that is not available to us in each moment is what isn't. But usually, what we want is what isn't. We want to avoid pain altogether. We want to prolong pleasure forever. These things aren't possible. Pleasure, like everything, is temporary, dependent on certain circumstances. Pain is also temporary, but when the circumstances for pain happen, and there are times when we can't keep them from happening, pain will happen. The trick is to stop trying to hoard pleasure, and stop trying to resist pain.
So, to recap, I think that everything is one, all part of the same one thing, that thing being the universe as a whole. We split it up in to separate parts for convenience's sake, but forget that it's all the same stuff. Separateness is an illusion caused by the way we think of things, and the objective reality of the universe is a mystery to us because we can only experience it through limited senses, thinking, and for a limited amount of time.
Is that long-winded and pretentious enough for you? :)
