Current favorite: the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. Very scary.
Runner up: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Also loved: Alien; The Haunting; Frailty; The Blob (1988), The Fly (Jeff Goldblum); The Gift; (Cate Blanchett), Rosemary's Baby; The Thing (1982), Eight-Legged Freaks; and Misery.

Honestly Nightmare on elm street would be mine, though Exocist is a close second. That was the only movie where Freddy was a genuine fright, unlike the joke they made of him the rest of the parts. I didn't want to sleep after the first viewing, let alone hoping not to dream.

All of the Evil Dead movies. There are three, but the last one is called Army of Darkness.
The first was really scary, but the next two parts were modified, and just a little of insane humour was added to it, and it was great.

the only horror movie that has actually scared me was this hindi movie called "Kaal" it was freaky!!! and it's my favorite. i also liked The Exorcism of Emily Rose but it wasn't scary. but a good movie. the visuals were kinda freaky.
