Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched. Used to measure a pitcher's effectiveness in terms of letting people reach base instead of just ERA, ie how often does he have to pitch himself out of a jam?

a WHIP at or near an even 1.00 is just absolutely phenominal.
any pitcher with a WHIP at 1.50 or higher is certainly not a candidate to get a fat contract extension anytime soon......LOL
most pitchers will be somewhere between those two numbers.
