In regards to marketing it is usually used when a target prospect is generated. Sales leads can be based on people who have shown an interest in something in the past such as a gym membership or have purchased things that are similar to what ever you may be selling. A lot of people are unaware of the marketing that is done from the discount cards that grocery stores use. Apply for one 'free' and they can track what ever you buy. That is one way that sales teams target areas. They know that a certain part of the city drinks more of a certain type of soda than another so they try to target their newer similar products there.
As far as sales leads, they can come from anywhere. Online surveys, telemarketing, fill out forms, public records ... you name it and it is fair game to try and get new customers. Leads can come from anywhere and it is usually the entry level people that have to fish through "cold leads" or ones that have almost no information to them.

That might not seem like a lot of info to most people but if you were selling insurance, there's two areas you can target right there [home, auto]. The cold calls are ones that are placed to see if there is any interest. If you are just getting into sales and marketing, that is probably what you will be doing.
Generally leads are potential customers but they could mean something of a bigger scope. It could mean a sales area or territory too.

Lead time is the time difference between taking an order from a customer and when the customer actually receives his purchase. It could be anywhere up to six months or more depending on size, availability, and complexity etc. of the order, and the needs of the customer.

Exactly!
If I walked in and said, "Hey Joe! I have a GREAT lead for you," it means that I found a potential client that is more than likely to buy from you.
