They are likely remnants of Assryian, Nestorian and other "heretical" churches which fled east in the early centuries.

Armenians are a large minority and bring their own religion with them. I don't believe the mullahs cracked down on Christians and I think they are allowed to flourish without governmental interference. There were some synagouges when the shah was around but they closed down after the Revolution.

Yes, but most of the Christians chose to worship privately in their homes. They are worried that extremists will accuse them of wrongdoing or going against the government. I have had friends that have had their homes raided and Bibles confiscated and burned...which is very troubling and perplexing as I've been told countless times that Muslims respect the Bible and they are to treat people of the Book with respect/as brothers. It seems a bit contradictory. ...sorry about the Saddam thing a few seconds ago...I'm very sleepy...I thought the question asked about Iraq...not Iran.

establishing non Muslim places of worship in public places is banned in almost all hte Muslim countries. No way you can establish a church in Iran. Though Iran has a legitimate grouse that enough mosques are not built is USA!
