I got the Merana IUD and my Dr. said to make sure it is in place you need to see if you can feel the strings, so I checked and not only do I feel the strings, I can feel the IUD itself. Is this normal?

I've had an IUD for 17 years, actually on my 2nd one now, and I've NEVER felt the IUD itself... only the string.

You need to have it checked by your gyn or doctor. Also use some other form of birth control until you are assured your IUD is properly in place. It is entirely possible to expel an IUD, or if the string gets caught on a tampon you can inadvertently pull it out.

Edit: I found an image of an IUD in position. It is inserted well past the cervix with only the string outside the cervix. http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/sex/common/ibank/ibank/0121.jpg

If you believe you can feel the IUD itself get to the doctor ASAP!!

You should not be able to feel the IUD itself since it should be INSIDE you uterus past the cervics. You should feel the strings and the knot at the top if you cant feel the knot then it has gone in a little bit! if you feel the IUD itself then its coming out go to the ER asap

I too have the Mirena IUD and my doctor said it is NOT normal to feel the IUD itself. She said you should be able to feel only the string. If you feel the IUD itself, it could mean that it is falling out. See your gyno ASAP!

Yes it is normal. It is T shaped, so you are able to feel it on the end of your cervix.
