My cousin/best friend just had a baby girl. This is the first time that someone that I've been close to has had a baby and I am going to visit her in the hospital tomorrow. Am I supposed to bring something like a stuffed animal for the baby? Do I bring the mom flowers? I'd like some cute ideas/suggestions... Please help.

My sister had 2 children, and my boyfriend has a daughter so this one is simple. Bring a beautiful card with some flowers for a couple of bucks with a vase from the dollar store. They have the best things at low prices. Then bring the baby a hat, socks a pacifier and maybe a little toiletries for mom. If that is out of your money range, get an outfit for baby and a balloon for the room. You must remember this is a brand-new life here,so brighten up the room for mom and dad because they are afraid and don't know what to expect next. They need something to take their mind off what they are going to do when they leave the hospital. Oh, yeah don't forget the camera you'll need a baby keepsake scrapbook to look back on.

When I was in the hospital with my daughter, my family brought some really cute practical clothes for her since I didn't know the gender until she was born. It was nice to have all the pink girly things once I had my little girl! My sister got me a big nice photo album that I have since been filling with all the pictures I've taken of my little one. A friend gave me a baby handprint kit and I couldn't wait until my daughter was old enough to use it! It came in a heart shaped container and you mix up the plaster and put their handprints in it... Photo frames are great - one that would look cute in the nursery.
It's my opinion that the best gifts are the things that people would love but would never want to spend their own money on. Like some cute baby shoes or booties and matching hat set that cost a little more than someone would like to spend themselves. Or a well made blanket or more pricey nice stuffed animal that the child won't get much out of until they're older, but until then it will look pretty in the nursery...
I'm sure the mom would love to have flowers or something that is not hospital food. My sister brought me one of my favorite healthy snacks and I just loved her for it because the hospital food wasn't doing it for me!
The only other thing I can think of is maybe putting together a basket of little items, like bibs and burp rags(get flannel ones!), washcloths, hooded towels, and baby wash/shampoo/lotion.
Good luck!

I think I would go with a gift card to a store where she can buy something for her or the baby. She needs to travel light for the trip home with the baby and flowers others are or she might be allergic to. And stuffed animals become a mess to clean up after you get a dozen or so from well meaning friends. Let her pick up what she needs and go shopping with her and hold the baby while she looks around for her and the baby's needs!

I know it's all about the baby, but maybe something for the mom. She's worn out and probably really tired. You can always check the gift shop, they usually have some cute little outfits in them. The hospital where I had my daughter had a cute little t-shirt and matching hat with the hospitals name on it, and the t-shirt had baby animals on it, and said I was born at Credit Valley (name of the hospital)

Something for Mom and Dad! They have been through a lot (especially Mom) and will get TONS of stuff for the baby. How about a pampering basket with lotions, bath products, a relaxation CD, etc. Or a gift certificate for a massage or take-out when the new parents too sleep deprived to cook?? Maybe a good box of chocolates??

A nice little Congratulations "mommy and daddy" card, maybe a few balloons. Something for the baby might be nice but not too much cause no one really wants to have to pack all that stuff home with them. Some flowers for the mom would be a nice suggestion and the stuffed animal for the baby.

Make up a gift basket, it's easy and homemade, so it will mean a lot to the new mom (and baby!) You can put essential baby products in it such as diapers, bottles, burping blankets, wipes, powder, binkies, rattle/stuffed animal/tiny toy, etc. Make it a themed color, suchas blue or pink, and maybe add an outfit that would match the colors/theme of the basket. It's easy, affordable, and creative. Good luck! :)

I'd suggest a card. They are going to have enough stuff to bring home from the hospital as it is. Wait until they get home for the flowers and cute stuff.

Bring yourself and a smile. :) You have to remember that mom and baby will have other visitors, and everyone (or mostly everyone) will be bringing gifts. Not only do mom and dad have to get themselves and their baby to the car, but also 5 flower arrangements, 6 teddy bears, several outfits for the baby, 15 cards, and anything else that anyone brings.

A nice gift to "give" your cousin would be an offer to babysit at a later date, when she's recovered from her labor and delivery, and your second cousin is a little older. :)

Bring whatever you like. I know when I had my daughter my friend brought me a dozen roses and a small stuffed bear for her. If you want to go more than that, go to Babies R Us and look at the gift baskets....Wal-Mart has them too. The best thing someone got me was the Johnson & Johnson baby kit. It has all the meds they could possible use.
