I have to take a lot of medications and a lot of them cause constipation. A nurse once told me that the GI track is last on the list of which systems gets water in the body. So you need to increase the water intake.

How is his urine? If it comes out pale yellow then he is receiving enough water, if it is darker then you should increase the water intake. If it comes out clear then your son is getting more than enough water.

Prune Juice also has a liquefying nature, which is why it is popular with older people. I have found that Fig Newton’s work well for me, and taste better.

You also need to increase the amount of fiber in his diet. Whole Grains and lettuce help. I take fiber pills myself. There are fiber sources that can be chewed, put into a drink, or just swallowed as pills.

Medically I have been prescribed Docusate Sodium, it is also available over the counter, but you should contact your child's pediatrician before using it. In the mean time a little Ex Lax should make things move smoother. Start him on half a dose and see how that works. I would do that only once though and try the prune juice and Fig Newton’s first.

Exactly how are your son's stools? Are they hard balls, or is it a hard log (yes, this is gross, and I am sorry). Do you see any blood in it, or anything black (which could be blood). Some GI bleeding is natural, but too much will put clotting agents into the feces making it hard. A doctor will have to make that determination though (I have had both problems).

If he continues to have problems with hard stools then it can cause tears in the GI track, which could cause intestinal bleeding, and increase his problem. So prompt attention to this problem is necessary.

As the parent of 5 children i can tell you this, The advice that you are getting about drinking plenty of water and fruit juice and fiberous foods is good advice BUT it rarely if ever works Of course if your child consumes those things every day it will help a great deal, however you have already went way behond the point that any of those things will help.
Over the years we have had the same problem with several of our children and we have found a simple old time remedy that works very well.
If your child still takes a bottle then you need to pour about 3 big table spoons full of clear corn syrup into his/her bottle and then finish filling with milk. Shake it up very good and have him/her drink it. If your child doesnt take a bottle then complete the same process with a glass of milk. If the problem isnt solved by the following morning then repeat the process (most times it works over night )
I wouldnt recommend giving a child that young prunes or prune juice because you run the risk of dehydration and i most certainly wouldnt have a child that small drink 8 glass's of water a day unless you want to risk drowning him or her.
It is also a good idea to keep your child from eating yogart

Best Constipation Cures

Try feeding him 1/4 cup of softened cereal (soaked in milk or formula) such as fiber one on a regular basis "everyday" or "ADULT" prune juice I would start with 1/4 cup and gradually increase according to tolerability on his part. I had people suggesting baby prune juice but if you look at the fiber content it is next to nothing. Hydration is also a key in constipation. Fluid, Fluid. Fluid.
I would really focus on dietary changes to resolve the problem if at all poss able. The more you rely on medications to correct the problem the more your child's body is going to rely on them to work correctly also. However, that being said be aware of when to see your pediatrician also - he might have a problem that needs addressed. You know your child, if you don't feel comfortable take him for a 2nd or 3rd opinion.

I have been told that for a child to go a week with out a bowl movement is not unusual. Is he eating food like prunes, a few spoonfuls every day will help a lot, or prune juice , watered down 50/50, works try to get his bowels working normal rather than using chemicals or enemas Good luck

This may sound silly but it has always worked for my boys when that has happened. Buy some karo syrup in the grocery store (the dark, not light). Mix about half and half with what ever he drinks two or three times a day. Be careful not to do this too much though cause he will get used to the sweetness and wont want to drink anything but karo. good luck. Im sorry!

Give him water with karo syrup in it. It will help! Fix him a pint bottle of cool water and add about 1/4 c of white karo syrup and shake it well. It will loosen his bowels up for him. It is also good for gas if you or your baby get it. I use sugar in cool water for coughs if I have given cough syrup and the cough is still persisting. It works and it isn't full of alcohol or other additives. A child will sleep if sick- if their cough doesn't keep them awake! You can also gently rub you son just above his tailbone to help stimualte his bowels. I know that is what animals do but I have done it to myself, my kids, and grandkids and it works. Don't do it hard or for too long. If he is laying on your lap, just gently rub and he won't know why you are doing it, it will just feel relaxing. If none of the above works you can lay him on his back and hold his legs up and bent. put vaseline on his rectal thermometer and insert it. Make sure he stays still. It will stimulate the bowels quick. I did it to my grandson and it looked like a playdough factory with the poop coming out in a long hard cylinder! Save this for last though because you never want to do invasive things if it can be done other ways. Best wishes and I hope he feels better soon.

You can try Prune Juice. It should start to soften his stool. So he can have a bowel movement.
