You know I can totally understand what you are saying. I think it has to do with self-esteem and the way someone is perceived.
I am one of those people who can look awesome if my hair and makeup are done but look pretty plain just to run errands in my gym shorts & tshirt. I can tell you from experience time and time again, when I give the effort to look good, people look at me, smile, treat me nicely, guys turn their heads, people even give me less trouble to return merchandise at a store, I'm serious! I'm not fat, so this might not be exactly what you're looking for, but when I am in running shoes, no makeup, maybe even a hat, people look right past me, treat me a touch more rudely, etc. I don't usually even try to do anything important unless I'm in "pretty" mode! I bet since I'm so aware of it, I don't even smile as much......wow.......
So ugly people or even people who don't look AWESOME might just start to assimilate the message that people in public give them "you're not worth it," "you're only valuable if you're pretty" etc. It might become a self-esteem issue.

I think what you say is true and it has to do with how we are feeling on the inside.
I am - well, let's say fluffy - and while I would love to be thin, it hasn't been something I have been able to accomplish since kids- so I try every hard to look clean, neat and well-groomed, and I smile. I try to carry myself confidently - not always easy but I try. I get out of the car at the store, the first thing I do before closing the car door is to straighten my clothing. Nothing looks more "slovenly" than to have one side of a shirt hiked up on one large butt cheek.
I am not advocating being fat, but I am saying until one can change that, then be the best "you" -that you can be. Always be sure that you appear as if you care about your appearance and smile and be kind. Being kind to people is a joy and people appreciate it no matter what your size.
So to sum it up, beautiful girls have probably always been beautiful and smile because they feel that way inside and out. Fat girls, not so much - so we need to compensate.

Sometimes the opposite is true, too.
I find obese women just as smiling and happy as the thin ones.
The heavy women have to rely on humour and brains to stand out from their beautiful oppositions, or they'll never get noticed. And then I've seen beautiful women who are such a bore or their nose is so high in the air, they are not happy or they are no longer attractive.
Anyway, I'm well-rounded (not literally) as I possess a little bit of both.
No matter who you are or what you look like, it's all about confidence.

What! I am a larger size woman and i smile all the time even if i am out and about i am married and have kids and i have seen many smaller women who dont smile. But by you calling the ugly fat girls is enough to make nobody smile. Just remember than god made everybody different and if everyone was the same it would be a boring place to live.
as my hubby says to me he would rather cuddle me than a bag of bones.

I'm far from skinny, and I smile all the time. Why? Not because of being 'pleased' with my looks, but because I'm happy with my life. I have a great, talented daughter....I have a job and can pay all my bills without worrying 'What if there's an emergency? How will I pay for _________???"......... my friends and family are all healthy and have been a great support system in good times and bad. Good grief, man! Why does everything have to be about looks???? I have a lot of pretty, skinny friends, and most of the time, they're always complaining about something!

Because there is alot more than just their weight that is effecting them. It is people making comments. They know alot of times that they are nice people on the inside but they are not accepted for their character or personality. They are judged on outer appearance. This causes insecurity which makes them depressed. It doesn't matter whether they accept themselves for who they are on the inside they will never be beautiful to anyone in their eyes and it hurts.

People who have a good heart don't have a set mould that they come in. There are many people of all shapes and sizes that are constantly smiling and have a good heart. Perhaps the reason why people don't smile around you is because you throw around stereotypes such as this and claim it as a fact.

I am an older woman of 49, while I am not fat...I would not be considered "hot" in today's venacular. I would be considered an average middle aged lady. I smile all the time. Maybe it is my age....but I just don't give a flying fig what others think about my looks or anything else about me. It only matters what I think. Therefore....I smile!

Do you smile at them? A smile from you will make a smile from them. You say you dont judge looks but the words ugly and fat are pretty shallow words.

The "fat" girls probably dont feel self confident enough to smile.
The women you percieve as beautiful - probably appear beautiful in part because of their smile.
