I went to my doctor last month and told her my left index finger has been hurting. When I wake up in the morning my finger is stiff and hurting real bad. I cannot grip or pick up anything with it. She told me I had what is called a "trigger finger".About a week ago the same thing is happening to the same finger on my right hand.I don't think that this has anything to do with a trigger finger. The pain is in the joint and is swollen.I cannot bend them without it hurting. Can someone please tell me if you have any of these symptons and what do I do about it.

Quite possibly could be gout. If you want to try a natural remedy, my clients have had good success with a product called UltraInflamX. It's helped to keep several of them (a couple with chronic problems) gout-free. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Trigger finger is tenosynovitis of the tendon to the finger. In other words there is inflammation to the tendon and it forms a nodule on the tendon. When you go to flex your finger the nodule on the tendon must pass into the tendon sheath and it will snap as it enters and the finger will make an abrupt movement. It can be painful. An important point, trigger finger is not a painful joint, in trigger finger the joints are just fine. You sound like the joint itself is extremely tender. If it is only happening to one finger that is strange unless you have had some trauma to that finger. Have you ever dislocated the joint, or do you use that finger in a repetitive motion say at work? It may be a form of arthritis, or a long shot lyme disease. I would go to a hand doctor and have it examined, and or go get tested for lymes disease if you have not had any trauma.

This is not trigger finger.

Trigger finger is when your finger gets stuck in the position like it's pulling a trigger.

What you are describing is joint inflammation.

Many things can cause this from viruses or other infections, arthritis (young people can get this too), gout, Lupus or trauma -- to name a few. (Don't be scared by the mention of Lupus -- usually it's associated with pain in multiple joints.)

You were right to seek care. But it sounds like you need a second opinion.
