A sheriff's responsible for a small, well-defined area with a state.

A U.S. Marshal is resposible for The United States. They are also involved with the transportation of Federal criminals and the serving of Federal Warrents.

A regular Sheriff is assigned generally to a county or municipal area. A US Marshal is a federal sheriff. They have various responsibilities, the most famous currently being hunting down fugitives, people with outstnading federal warrants, and providing undercover security on airplanes.

Depends, which one are you running from? Just kidding, the united states marshal is more or less the sheriff's dept for the entire country while a local sheriff's dept only covers a set area in their state.

A Marshall is a federal employee.. Where as a Sheriff is a county cop. A federal Marshall will go anywhere in the world to "get their man" or "women"

US Marshall is a Federal position. Sheriff is a County position. In Maryland, the Sheriff is elected. The Deputies are hired and work for Him/her.

US Marshall is a Federal Post, they are set up to catch fugitives of the Federal Courts and enforce bail requirements. A Sheriff is ordained by the County, and enforces law locally in that county.
