lol, those bbs are used routinely for two reasons. We put them on the nipples so that if the nipples are not in profile on the film, the radiologist will not confuse them with a mass within the breast. The bbs are also used to mark a mass that the patient feels within the breast. This helps to show the radiologist where you are feeling a lump. We also use other markers on the skin. They include round O looking things which we will put over a skin mole, as moles can look like a mass within the breast. We also put a wire on the breast if you are unlucky enough to have breast biopsy scars.
As funny as mammography markers are, check this out. I also do MRI scans. We tape regular old mustard packages (like you would get at a fast food restaurant) over areas of pain or areas of a lump before a MRI scan. I don't always remember to remove these mustard packs after an exam, especially if they are hidden under a gown. I had a patient call me a couple of hours after her exam to give me a reaming about not removing these packages! Boy, was she ticked off!

LOL how funny. I'm thankful for the mammograms because it saves so many lives. Who cares about the bb's??? It's not a big deal.

Mammograms are no fun but they're necessary. For those who responded wanting to know what it is, a mammogram is a test like an x-ray that checks for breast cancer.

You're certainly not the first to forget them. I had to guess what they were. And I had no idea. She said they were basically a target so the doctor would know exactly where everything was when he read the X-rays. To me, they just looked like little Band-Aids with a little silver bb in the center of it.

I hate everything about getting a mammogram. Who thought this torture up? Isn't there an easier way, that doesn't involve a vise?

I had my last one 3 years ago, and the bb's weren't used at that time. My last one required me to put my boob in a hydrolic press the squashed so hard, I got dizzy and almost fainted. If I were to faint, I wouldn't have to worry about falling to the floor, cos' my boob would hold me up.

Yes I hate those things. Only had one when I had a knot removed but once was enough to do me for a while. Those hurt me when I took them off.
