The Model 24 Stielhandgranate was a hand grenade used by the Germans during WWII. They had wooden handles with the explosive in a cylinder on the end. Instead of a pin, they had a cord that you pulled to arm them. They looked like old fashioned potato mashers, so the British started calling them that.

The potato masher is a hand grenade.
It had a long wooden handle and got its name because of the resemblance to an old-fashioned potato masher.
The German soldiers, unlike the Americans, did not play baseball and were not accustomed to throwing a small ball.
The American grenade was sometimes called a pineapple because of a slight resemblance to one.

Hand gernades that looked like a tin-can with a spool type of handle on one of the flat ends.

At the time Brits and Americans played ball. British men were familiar with cricket ball players throwing googlies, which is a lobbed pitch, so early gernades for them were near egg shaped with a simple radial ridgeline for extra control. Americans played stickball and later baseball but had to learn how to lobb so extra groves and a thicker skin was needed leading to a pineapple shape.. Germans didn't play ball, but did have duels with swords and knives, and so too practiced dart and knife throwing. The resulting gernade looked big and stupid in that sense, so patato masher fit the bill, especially sense in the field you could turn over your helmet and use the thing just like that .

Imagine a hand grenade with a wooden handle on it, maybe a coke can on the end of a stick. Makes it easier to throw, think throwing a hammer or a hatchet kindof motion.
