Seriously, the real reason is "First they talked Lambeau's employer -- a war-time industry called the Indian Packing Company, where he worked as a shipping clerk for $250/month -- into putting up money for jerseys."
In other words, they were named after the company, "Indian Packing."

They are from the city of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The city is on Lake Michigan. They used to pack a lot of fish there.
Hence the name.

they are called the Green Bay Packers because they are from green bay wisconsin and years ago, they had a meat packaging place ( factory) there.
