Adding salt for freshwater aquariums is an excellent method of destroying fin rot. It will also help speed the regrowth of new fins and will not affect the cycle of the tank.

Yep. Just get a bottle of Melafix. It's all natural and you just add a little every day for a week. After a week, you do a partial water change. Their fins will grow back and look much nicer. Had the same thing happen to my oscar. She started to look like shredded wheat. Her scales were also falling off from rubbing on the plants. She's back to normal now. Good luck ....just be patient and it's going to be fine.

My beloved Oscar got this before and I went to the petshop for advice. It was the most stupid thing I have ever done. I used the stuff they told me to, and when I woke up, my baby was dead. I don't know why I trusted a sales assistant with something so important. Where I live, there are vets that specialise is fish, etc and I recommend you take him there. (Most vets might do it, I'm not sure). It can be cured, but only by someone who knows what they are doing.

I've had a couple of oscars, you can usually buy some tablets that you drop into the water every two days and then change half of the aquarium water, that should do it.

Yep - use Maracyn-2 from Virbac Animal Health. This is the best Antibiotic on the market for fin/tail rot.

remove 1/3 of the water in the tank and replace it with freshwater. put in some medicine. the main thing is to keep the water clean bu doing constant partial water changes. This is true of all fish but especially oscars because they are big and dirty!

Do more water changes frequently, especially with an oscar. Melafix is supposed to work for that, and it won't destroy your good bacteria.

Definately contact a vet. I have had two that had come down with this. The first I went to the pet store and then he died - the next one I called the vet and he gave medicine. Good luck

I think so, if you do frequent water exchanges and keep the tank very clean. Not sure what medications work. Mine got hole in the head disease once.
