To those unaware- Canada has free health care unlike the US and so the cost is very minimal. They pay a co pay only.
Have your parents make you an appointment with a dentist. The first visit they exam and clean your teeth. You coudl try talking to the dentist privately and explain they have objections too braces because of their culture or upbringing and that you need help convincing them of the need. If you can't speak to him or her privately you probably will hear them bring up the topic anyway and most doctors will be fairly insistent on doing this work since it has so much affcet on your health never mind your looks. Poorly spaced teeth affect eating habits and often jaw and gum disease. They are also more suseptible to decay since cleaning them is more difficult.
You can always call the office when your parents are not around as well to speak to the staff if the first visit doesn't get them to agree and make a plan for the follow-up.
Good luck!

Try to go on your own to an orthodontists office and just have them take a look, it is usually free, and have them write something on paper for you. I feel for you. If you were in the USA, you could tell your counselor at school that you need somebody to tell your parents that you are in dire need of orthodontia. Tell your parents that it causes you pain and embarrassment. You will lose all of your teeth eventually, especially when your wisdom come in. If your teeth are that crowded, your wisdom teeth will crush your other teeth and they will start falling out in pieces. Your bite will change and your other teeth will get ground away and break and chip off. By the time you are 40, you won't have any molars and then the front teeth will go. Is that what they want for you?
It makes me sad that your parents think that way. Maybe in Africa, it isn't important to have a nice smile. Here in North America, it is important to have a nice smile if you want to be more than just an average person or employee. Believe me, people say looks don't matter, but they do matter. Also, your health is at risk too. Your mouth is the gateway to your body and healthy teeth can make the difference between good health and bad health. I wish you the best and show your parents this post. Good luck honey.

You can ask them, or ask your dentist at your next visit. He/she can do an orthodontic evaluation and tell you if braces can help. Your dentist may not put them on, though. That's usually done by a specialist called an orthodontist.
The orthodontist will also evaluate your teeth and tell you if braces will help, or if other techniques will work. A retainer may be all you need.
If your parents still won't/can't agree to braces, don't give up hope yet. They are still effective on adults, and you can get them when you are older yet.

Why don't you go to a local orthodontist and get a free estimate and ask him to write his opinion down on paper so you can show your mother and father. Why are they objecting? Is it the cost?
Braces can cost thousands of dollars you know. Maybe you could get a part time job to help pay for it and then they might consider getting them for you. Or, you don't say what city u live in, check to see if theres a local dental school at your university closeby, maybe u can work a deal. they're always looking for someone to work on. Good Luck

Maybe if you could get them better paying jobs, they would be more willing to shell out the thousands of dollars it will take to get your braces.

My husband is from Sudan. It is their culture to pull out the front bottom teeth. But he is now in the US. He wears partials. Tell your parents It is our culture to have healthy teeth. Tell them that you want to have the best opportunities. They can not object to that. Parents want what is best for their kids.
