Why would this happen? It comes on slow, and then I have to stop running. Its almost like a cramp in my rib. It goes away If I walk for a while, then I can run again. Why does it happen, and how can I prevent it in the future?

This is most likely a spasm of the diaphragm muscles. This can happen when the diaphragm (which controls breating) does not receive enough blood supply. Most often, this occurs because the runner has eaten recently and the blood which is normally sent to the diaphragm during aerobic respiration, is sent to the stomach instead. This lack of blood supply to the diaphragm causes it to spasm.

Another theory is that the strain of running causes the internal organs to "bounce" and this causes constant irritation of its supporting ligaments....this causes the stitch. I subscribe less to this theory because that would mean that everytime I run, I would get the pain!

To avoid getting the stitch in you side, be sure to wait at least a couple hours after eating before running. Pace your training adequetly...your diaphragm is a muscle just like others and needs to be trained in order to function an high intensities. If you do experience a "stitch," try one of the following techniques:
1. walk
2. walk with arms overhead
3. put your fingers firmly on the painful site and exhale forcefully when striking the ground with your heel of the same side while running

Best wishes!

Maybe you are going at it too hard and you are not warming up properly before and you need to improve on your breathing technique.
More important, get a medical check-up to make sure everything is alright

You need to breathe adequately when you run. IE breathe through your nose not your mouth. Take deep breathes, not superficial breathes.

it's because you didn't let all your breath out of your lungs... make sure you breath all the way and let it out all they way
this is really important... if you get this again, put your fingers where it hurts and push.. you will burp... which means the air is out of your system..

*MAKE SURE YOU STRETCH BEFORE AND AFTER YOU JOG!*

Its called a stitch, and time takes care of it. Be sure to not get dehydrated.
