I will try to be neither stupid nor a dumb ***.
Our constitutional framers made the consitution simple in both its concepts and its terms. In that way, it can be "interpreted" with changing events.
For example, it does NOT say anything about automobiles or airplane travel -- because there were no automobiles or airplanes. It does talk about the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures (4th amendment), but that definition changes depending on the circumstance.
Those constitutions (and laws) that are written in specific terms quickly become outdated.
I would note, however, that while the constitution is a mere few pages in length, the United States Supreme Court has filled over 500 VOLUMES of books interpreting that simple document.

Because our brave soldiers throughout American history have fought and died to protect the constitution. Because checks and balances ensures that no branch of government gets too much power - although now congress has ceded their balance to the executive and that is why the constitution is currently being threatened. Because the American people have voted, and sometimes fought, to change the government when it gets out of control.
The biggest reason is because the founding fathers wrote the constitution after subjugation as a british colony - they knew the evils of taxation without representation and a government out of control. Everything written into the constitution and the bill of rights was to prevent government from getting too powerful, to promote free speech and dissent amongs Americans, and presidents that can only stay elected for 2 terms.

The US Constitution has lasted because;
1. It is simple and limited so few changes are needed.
2. Changing it requires a great deal of effort.
3. Americans value order and liberty.

Three Reasons:
1) It was well thought out as a basic concept of freedom with government.
2) It can be changed by majority consent.
3) It is very hard to change via majority consent.

To sum up simply what others have said:
Because it is so flexible while maintaining its essential principles.
It was designed not with just the Revolutionary Era present in mind, but allowed itself to be modified as needs, society demanded in the future.

because the process of changing it is so complicated. also, it's against the law to conspire or talk of overthrowing the government, so we haven't have a radical change since the revolution. look how the civil war turned out.

This because of the reason that we can create amendments to the constitution instead of rewriting it.
