I prefer sweet guys and would never actually date an arrogant jerk, but I have to admit that when I see a guy who is confident to the point of being an asshole, I am attracted to him! I hate it!! Why is this?

It's human nature. We precieve the arrogant jerk as the alpha male. When you are trying to keep your "pack" from dying out you are going to pick the strong masculine type, not the sweet docile one.
And you wont get over it..... you will still be attracted to them when you hit middle age and well after.

I think it actually has to do with evolution and reproduction. A woman is naturally attracted to a man who looks like he'd be able to protect her and protect her babies. Thus, she is sexually attracted to the alpha male, or the man with higher testosterone levels, bigger muscles, and more aggressive behavior. People don't mess with them. However, in today's world, being able to protect your woman isn't about physically combating other men away. So while most women may be naturally attracted to these men on a sexual level, they likely will not be very happy in the long run, as they become tired of verbal abuse, domination, infidelity and bullying. If a woman gives the "nice guy" time, she will find that she can become sexually attracted to him through intellectual and emotional attraction, and this type of holistic attraction is the kind that renders respect and long-lasting results. EDIT: Had The Man read my entire post, he would not have needed to edit his :) The asshole attracts the woman sexually and leaves/turns her off emotionally. The nice guy offers her the emotional comforts. Not all nice guys are pushovers and get "suckered in" to taking care of women who have been cheated on though. Most women I know have been cheated on and have learned to go for nice guys because of it. Most "nice" men I know have seen what it's like for a sister, mother, etc., to get cheated on, and they know how to respect a woman.

protection. a nice guy is a nice guy because he is unwilling or unable to defend himself, so he keeps out of fights by being friendly. there is a such thing as a confident man who is not overconfident or an asshole. its just that the assholes get your attention, or perhaps the confident men are always dealing with morons and having to set them straight, thereby seeming to be assholes.

I like the "alpha male" answer. Most women want to be led and a strong man who is decisive (whether he's wrong or not or mean to others) can satisfy this need. They feel secure when they're around him. Sure it's not the PC view and a lot of people won't accept it, but I believe it to be true.

i am not attracted to arrogant jerks... maybe physically if before someone opens their mouth they may be quote un-quote attractive... but when it comes down to it, personality can far outweigh an attractive jerk!

subconsciously you are attracted to the neuro signals (body language) of this guy, the confidence, the way he carried himself, these maybe the characteristics that you're looking for either within or without.
