First off why are you shy?
Are you shy b/c you get nervous around women?
Honestly, girls and guys aren't that different. (If you poke either on a crowded bus, they'll both stare at you as if you were completely insane.)
If you get nervous b/c you think of what she'll think of you then think of this: Isn't it better to get a new friend than getting a girlfriend. If you were looking for a new friend instead of looking for someone to settle down with, I bet you'd be a lot more open.
