I think it is worse when it is mixed with diesel fuel. This was a trick used by disreputable trucking competitors for years. In a diesel, it will start to break down into a gummy sludge. It also causes havoc in the tight tolerances of modern diesel fuel pumps and injectors. Filters have come a long way in the past years, but i have seen injectors get wiped out if the sugar is not flushed for a long time.
Don't get me wrong, I love the myth busters. Hopefully they will try it with diesel someday.

It's much more fun when a payday candy bar if broken up and put down the fuel filler hole. It takes several gas fills before the sugar melts off the peanuts and the nuts plug the filler just enough that it will still take gas, only it backs up and soaks the person filling the tank and filling the tank takes hours.Someone did this to a customer of mine and it took a while to figure it out!

There is an 07 Dodge Caliber in my shop right now that will not start due to sugar in the fuel tank. The sugar ruined the fuel pump, fuel level sender, and the injectors. The injectors have big stalactites of sugar hanging off the end of them. The sugar does not burn very well and will do long term damage to the rings and cylinder walls. This is not an immediate failure kind of problem but one that causes longer term damage.

It will slow preformance and could take out a fuel pump, but the fuel filiter should get most of it before it burns. It depends on how long and how much sugar is/was in the tank.

Try putting some gasoline and sugar in a clear glass jar and shaking the crap out of it. I've tried and can't get it to mix, so I'm darned if I know how it can get through your fuel filter?

Myth Busters covered this but SUGAR WILL NOT DISSOLVE IN GASOLINE!
The worst that could happen is if the strainer sock in the fuel tank would plug and not let the fuel to the pump.
