The war on drugs created Drug lords, Drug Mafia all over the world. But drugs are just as prevalent as ever ( The war has been lost Even famous right wing talk show hosts have been arrested for illegal drug use ).
The USA spending billions of dollars on it. My question really is that the war is political or some people wants to make fortune (like the prison industry or drug companies or even the drug lords) out of it or something like that.
Prohibition never seems to works any way.

Why can't drugs be lagalized and spend money on helping the inevitable addicts as is done for alcohol. Wouldn't that be a wiser way to spend money.

This was posted once before but got only 3 answers.

Where would a good place be to post to get more answers?

I agree Rush Limbaugh is stupid but that is not the point.

Wouldn't the money be better spent in different methods.

i agree with you... drugs are illegal but people still use them and can get them as if they were legal...
i think there are a lot of people who are smart enough to say no to drugs and they are the group that hasnt done any so far..

but sooo much money is put tooo waste!! as well as school funding..
an inmate in jail costs $$34,000 a year mean while the average student in a public school is only $10,000.. i mean that 10 grand is alot but for prisoners who are supposed to be punished and have it bad... why are they getting more money spent on them then the people who are already willing to make a difference

Simply stated, the alcohol and tobacco lobbies in Washington will never allow any other recreational drugs to be legalized, or decriminalized. They stand to lose too much money.

The hemp plant, commonly known as marijuana, has more viable industrial uses than any other known plant. It can produce oil, which would hurt the oil and plastics industries....

Its fibers are incredibly strong, but would hurt the existing textile industries...

Plus, it has a very short growth cycle.

Did you know that Besty Ross' original flag was made from hemp? Most of the founding fathers grew hemp....and both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were written on paper made from hemp.

It was only is the early 20th century that hemp was criminalized at the behest of the tobacco, alcohol, and oil industries.

Such a waste....it could be taxed to the hilt and give our economy a incredible boost.

The drug war is defiantly political. If drugs were legalized the government would get their share of the money just as it does with alcohol and tobacco. I think that they are afraid that things just might get a little out of hand if it were legalized. Some drugs were legal at one time and they proved to cause poverty and other things. The USA is afraid of legal drugs. We put people in jail for drug use and crimes when what is really needed is some type of rehab for the ones that broke the law. I know that it is easy to get drugs on the street and if the dealer is going to get rich then the government should wise up and make some money too.

you left out another point. Drugs are cheaper now than ever (adjusted for inflation of course). The war on drugs is a huge failure.

But some drugs need to be kept illegal. Consider meth vs. weed.

I am not exposed to highly toxic chemicals, and explosive risks when somebody is running some grow lights in their basement. The whole mantra of the drug cultures is that they are not hurting anybody but themselves. And in some cases it is true, but in others it is not.

We need to have a rational debate and analysis of what drugs do what. But many will whip themselves into a puritanical frenzy then go home and take a Xanax and some vodka.

There is no 'answer' my friend.

I've often wondered something very similar myself but u have to keep in mind: how many crooked people in government r gettin 'kick backs' from those drug lords n cartels they publicly denounce. Personally i think it is way passed due time to reform n rethink legislation on illegal drugs. Personally I'd like to see marijuana legalised mainly because of its potential medical benefits ( for the terminally ill n for help with side affects of chemo) but then u get the dogooders whose most in depth thoughts on the subject r 'drugs r bad, mmkay'. Granted that there r some really nasty drugs out there but like u said, this way isn't working we need to try something else people! Maybe we would benefit ourselves as a society if we re thought this problem instead of shooting cannons at mosquitos!

Don't know if I answered this before but if I did it was the right answer: The U.S. and its allies and some of its enemies PROFIT from fighting the drug war AND losing it. The U.S. needs the underground income (buying fancy cars and homes) to keep the economy percolating. The truth about the bad people involved both in and out of governments is chilling as I understand it and you do not want to know.

It won't work because the majority of the population is opposed to the idea. It would be political suicide for any congressman outside of a few districts to propose such a law, and most other congressmen would never get re-elected if they voted for such a law. Welcome to a Republic, it's not always logical, but it's what we have to work with.

As long as drugs cause psychotic reactions from users no sane person would want them legalised.
